Simply Perfect
Rating by : Bee Tender, rating 1.0 of 5.0

This ice maker is fast, quiet, and makes decent sized cubes. It's easy to use with multiple cube size settings, a timer, and auto-off when the basket gets full. I researched ice makers for a couple of months because of their notoriously poor reviews and short lived performance as an appliance. I was surpirsed to find that this one was higher rated than the most commonly reviewed ice machines and even cost less money (when you factor shipping costs). Keep in mind that with any ice maker, you're going to need to clean the inside extremely well. I recommend running a full cycle and simply throwing away the ice after you've cleaned it just to get rid of the plastic odor and taste. But once you've done that, you're good to go. This is one of those types of appliances where you don't want to go with the cheapest one. Trust the ratings on this one and buy it.

You gotta love it

Okay, be prepared for a long-winded review; it’s hard for me to keep things simple.... Just ask my sons! Once (IF) you read the whole thing, you may ask yourself, why did I give this ice maker a 5-star review. Unfortunately, you will have to read on to learn the whole story. I also have to mention that I had an audience during the unveiling of my new ice maker, because I was a little late in getting started (That’s not like me; I was just busy multitasking several other projects); and our guests were waiting for some ice to cool the drinks that they got when they just arrived.

To start with, the equipment was well-packed and arrived in pretty good shape. The only thing is, instead of being a nice stainless steel color, it was blue...but that’s okay, it was pretty. I noticed a few scuff marks on the top, probably from the packaging itself or from some rough handling at the factory. No big deal. I also noticed some sand-like dirt inside the unit. Maybe it fell off the part-time worker who just made it in from the beach before having to start his shift on the packaging line. Finally, there were a few black plastic marks on the otherwise white plastic “bucket” that lines the inside of the ice maker; and they could not be removed during the first-time cleaning.

The instructions tell you to clean the interior with lukewarm water, but other reviewers say to clean it with soapy water. I first used dish-washing detergent, filled the bucket to the top, and washed everything really well. That’s when I discovered the first problem. I unscrewed and pulled the drain plug to let out all the soap, but the drain hole is so small that it took forever to empty. Once drained, I noticed that most of the debris (sand) had washed into the small sump around the drain hole, and getting it out was a chore, because of the small sump and the fact that the drain hole isn’t exactly at the bottom of the sump. A paper towel and some persistence finally did the trick, but then I discovered the next problem. There’s virtually no way to rinse the cleaning solution off of the actual ice-making compartment (“evaporators”) without tilting the unit over, which is a no-no. Luckily, we have one of those hose thingies on our kitchen faucet, and I was able to put it in spray mode and hose things off...which made a mess around the sink and which took me back to the last problem, the very slow draining. I am pretty much a stickler for clean things (but not OCD, I think), so I have to rinse and rinse until there’s no sign of soap suds...and then once more. This is taking a pretty long time, and my guests are getting a little impatient. Me, I don’t mind an occasional room-temperature drink. One thing I also observed during all this rinsing was that you can use your hand to swirl the water and entrain some of the debris (sand) to get it to wash out of the drain, instead of settling into the sump. This also gives you something to do while waiting for the VERY slow drain. You could also get your guests into the act to keep them occupied and not harassing you for ice to cool their drinks.

It might be hard to imagine why I took the time to perform the next steps, but I really like to do my research (typically extensive), read all the reviews of an item before I buy it and heed the advice of all the kind people who have taken the time to offer suggestions for how to make the best of their purchases. In this case, several reviewers suggested using vinegar to clean the plastic and remove any plastic taste from the first few batches of ice. Some reviewers also suggested using lemon juice, and many suggested dumping out the first few loads of ice, again just to eliminate any plastic taste. I decided to go with all of the above (which is typical of me), first wiping everything down with vinegar, then repeating with lemon juice, rinsing again (several times) and then announcing to everyone that I was about to plug in the machine and make some ice. The excitement in the room was palpable, when the the first cubes arrived just 8 minutes later; but then there were gasps...and nearly a riot, when I had to throw out the first batch. It was a mere 8 minutes later that the next batch arrived. I wanted to toss them, too, but for some reason I was outvoted. At least some of my guests were civil and only took a few cubes; the others had to wait for the next few batches. The waiting line made me feel that I was doing something really important for humanity. Before long, everyone was happy (cool), and the ice adventure was over. No one noticed any bad taste; in fact, they all said the ice was the best they had had...tonight.

There were only two other things worth mentioning in this review. First, as others have noted, the machine is a little noisy, the little compressor humming away with the joy of ice-making, and the little shovel happily pushing each batch of ice into the ice basket. It’s actually kind of cute to listen to, if you can appreciate the joy of ownership. The other thing is the “new” smell of the plastic that gets heated up by the machinery. Wait a minute, is that nice blue color now peeling off? Oh, now I see, it’s just a plastic wrapper that is there to protect all that nice stainless steel casing. I guess I was supposed to peel it off in the beginning, but that wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the instructions, which I just now reread in their entirety. You might be surprised to know that, while I am not anal about anything, for everything I ever buy, I always read the instructions all the way through before going back and performing the step-by-step start-up operations. Twice read....

The instructions for setting up and using the unit were not bad. At least there was one very valuable tip: “The appliance must be positioned so that the plug is accessible.” Hmmm? No kidding, the cord must reach all the way to the receptacle? Also, in the section about cleaning the unit, the first helpful tip is to “Take out the ice basket” (before cleaning the interior “bucket” below it). This time, they also suggest you use detergent...IF you have a lot of time...and no friends waiting!

RATING: I like this ice maker a lot. It works great, it’s fast, and it’s cool. The free delivery was exceptionally fast. There are lots of ice makers out there, but this this one is definitely worth the price...and 5 stars.

PS (Sorry): There is one strange thing about this unit, and it’s inside the very small drain. I was looking at it more closely, just to try to understand why they made the drain so small (and maybe so I could fix it). Anyway, there is a small strainer in there that is removable; I suppose that’s for cleaning, although it’s not mentioned anywhere. It’s also not mentioned WHY it’s there at all. I mean, is it important to not allow stuff that accumulates in the sump to go out the drain? Is it better to keep all that stuff in the water until you eventually get around to discovering that the strainer is full of stuff and blocking the drain? How much sand could that guy drop into just one ice-maker?
Oh, and by the way, when you wash...and rinse...everything really well, the inside of the lid gets wet, and water leaks into it, so you have to shake it out and tap it a lot until it gets dry. Otherwise, that rinse water will fall into the bucket of water that you are using to make your (very pure) ice.
Finally (I promise), let me know if you would like to have some updates, as I gain more experience and knowledge in this new skill. Good luck with your own future in ice making...and best wishes.
