A superior steam mop

Especially since I dislike the smell of household cleaners, I was seduced, a couple of years back, by the idea of a steam mop, seen in an infomercial. But I didn't buy the one advertised, I chose the Eureka Enviro Steamer, which has served me well on tile floors but which didn't perform so well on the bare wood floors.

This Black and Decker Steam Mop has settings for each floor type, and the pad, as much as I ordinarily hate hook-and-loop closures, stays on securely because of said closures. It also has a "shot of steam" feature, like some steam irons have, to remove tough spots.

One caveat: in assembling the steam mop, ensure that the handle is inserted correctly by noting that the wire-winding hook is on the same side as on the steamer body. This appliance could be improved by making the handle fit in only one way. As it is, I spent several tense minutes thinking it didn't work and would have to go back.

Another design flaw, or at least an area in which the appliance could be improved: the instructions indicate a maximum of 15.6 ounces of water should be used, and since the tank is clear a fill-line would be helpful. There is none.

Another issue, a problem in industrial design hardly unique to this mop: There is a "dial" for choosing the surface to be mopped, just a circle of three lights. But the designation--"Stone-Marble", "Tiles-Vinyl" and "Wood-Laminate"--are written along the edge, so a certain level of illumination is required. Those words, or at least icons, should overlay the lights themselves.

Cleans fairly well but has issues.

As a comparison we were using the Bissell Steam Mop. The advantages of the Black and Decker are a larger cleaning head, a larger water tank (both have detachable tanks) and a choice of surfaces to clean. Assembly took about 10 minutes with the hardest part being lining up the handle with the bottom of the unit. The water heats up quickly, in about 10 seconds and you are ready. If you have hard water they recommend de-ionized water, an old floor pro told me years ago, if you have hard water use water from your fridge water dispenser which is filtered. It cleans fairly well but there were dog prints (we have 5 dogs) left on the wood floor after cleaning, even with multiple passes.

The issues I have with this unit include, it is very, very hard to push. I am not sure why but the pads do not glide easily over the floor as promised in the instructions, even when saturated. This actally takes a decent amount of effort to do just a kitchen floor and pretty much wears me out. To make sure it wasn't that one pad I tried another and same thing. I also got out the old (and much cheaper) Bissell and it was not my imagination, it slides much easier and actually cleans the floor better when we comparted the parts done by each machine. The B & D just didn't put out as much steam as the Bissell which has a trigger for control. When pulling the machine back to you while cleaning the head does seem to ride up at an angle, but the hard part is pushing the head away on the outward cleaning stroke.

The carpet cleaning feature really didn't seem to have any effect except to make the carpets damp.

Overall not really a bad machine but honestly I do not think its worth the extra money since it is harder to use and doesn't really seem to clean better than cheaper machines.

Solid Steam Mop

I own the Eureka Enviro Hard-Surface Floor Steamer and it is my first steam mop and I love it. I was eager to see what Black and Decker could offer at twice the price. A steam mop is a steam mop is a steam mop, right? Wrong!

Firstly, it took me over an hour to put together my B&D SmartSelect Steam Mop. There are only a few pieces but I had trouble getting everything to click in correctly. I was starting to think it was defective until I took it apart and put it back together several times. The handle on mine is really hard to push in and get back out. B&D advertises as an easily detachable handle for storage but now that I finally got the sucker in properly, there is no way I am pulling it back out.

The important stuff - I love this steam mop! I would totally pay more for this one and I wish I had to begin with. Once this baby is put together, 15 seconds later and you are in business. A removable water tank seems like a godsend compared to all the funneling I was previously doing. The handle is much longer and more comfortable. I can easily do my downstairs with one tank (kitchen, living room, dining, and bathroom.) I am curious to see how the velcro pads hold up. I don't usually like velcro but it certainly makes it easy to detach and attach the pads.

Bonus - You can use this as a smaller handheld steamer (I have not, but am curious if it would work for clothing) and also a carpet glider to refresh your carpets. I refreshed my carpets and the steamer did nothing for them, they didn't even get a bit moist. Not sure if you need to waste your time with the carpet tool. My tile and hardwood floors look fantastic, though! Thanks SmartSelect.
