Dyson DC24 Animal Compact Upright Vacuum Cleaner - Check it Out
Reviews of Dyson Dc24 Animal Compact Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Love this little sucker!!!!
Rating by : Carrie A. Gajda,
I own a cleaning service so I use my vacuums all day everyday. Dyson is the only brand that I use. This is my third one and it has not disappointed so far. I also have an older upright about 5-6 years old and the dc39 canister (which I also love). They all work great for different functions/tasks. I particularly love the dc24's space saving design and its versatility.
Here are some things to consider when trying to decide on whether or not this vacuum is right for you:
The number one thing that people need to realize is that NO upright is good for bare floors! In order to obtain good results on bare floors you will need to utilize the pull out wand and hose along with a bare floor attachment such as the articulating hard floor attachment made by Dyson which fits this model. You will also need to utilize the wand feature to reach under beds, tables, and narrow or hard to reach areas. If you are expecting to be able to turn on this vacuum, turn off the spinning turbine head, and use it on bare floors as is you will be disappointed. I recommend the dc39 for homes with all or primarily hard floors.
Another thing to consider is that although it has great suction, it is not quite as powerful as a full sized upright. This model is designed more for low to medium pile carpets. Honestly, I've used this vacuum on a couple of my toughest clients' plush carpets and it performed better than my dc39 (while using the turbine head which supposedly has more suction power. True that you probably won't see as deep or pronounced waves or "v" marks that you would with other full sized uprights, but the proof is in the canister that you will see when you inevitably need to empty it.
The canister size is much smaller than the full sized uprights or the dc39, but that kind of thing doesn't bother me personally. It may be a turn off for some, but honestly they make it so easy to empty it's hardly a deal breaker.
Take care of your Dyson and it will take care of you. One thing that I have found very important is to take really good care of your Dyson. Like I said, I own a cleaning service where I clean 3 to 4 houses a day 5 days a week and after working all day I make sure I spend a few minutes cleaning out my canisters, vacuuming out any fine dust particles that may be stuck in there, and eliminating any hair or string that may be tangled in the turbine head. I also vacuum, wash, and/or change filters very frequently. I purchased some additional filters so I would always have a clean and dry filter for my vacuum each day. If you are only purchasing this for single home use, you could probably get away with doing this one a month depending on how much you use it.
Also, if you purchase this vacuum don't forget that it has a safety reset button on the side of the turbine head. If you accidentally attempt to suck up something it wasn't intended to, the turbine head will stop spinning to protect itself from "burn out". Your vacuum isn't broken you just need to push the little red button on the side of the turbine head and it will start spinning again. If it doesn't, you may have a clog and should refer to your manual or the website on how to check and/or clear it.
The versatility is great. If my dc39 canister is being used, this little sucker can serve the purpose of vacuuming bare floors simply by pulling out the wand, attaching it to the hose, throwing another bare floor attachment on the end and off you go. The ball technology is awesome so it will follow you around instead of just falling over like other uprights with the same feature.
One last thing that may help someone reading this is, yes most of the Dyson attachments will fit this model. I have the articulation hard floor attachment, mattress tool, stair tool, crevice tool, flexible crevice tool, and dusting tool all which fit on the end of the dc24's wand. They don't snap on, you have to use just a touch of muscle to push the attachment on.
My opinion is that this is a great vacuum for someone with the right expectations. I love it and I'm so glad I bought it!!! I hope my review will help a few people with their decision because I hate to see a great brand of vacuum getting bad reviews because of people with unrealistic expectations who are too lazy to empty their canisters or take 30 seconds to throw an attachment on the end of a wand in order to get better performance out of their vacuum. Vacuuming is work no matter which way you cut it and no matter which vacuum you use. Unrealistic expectation, user error, and laziness is not a flaw of the vacuum.
Thank you for reading and good luck with your vacuum shopping :)
The Dyson sphere: science fiction comes to life
Rating by : Gene Fellner "R.I.P. Sandy Denny",
I live in a basement studio with two dogs and a muddy yard, and this is the perfect vacuum cleaner for me. How many times has this floor really needed a quick vacuuming, but I just didn't feel like hauling my gigantic machine out and then manhandling it around the narrow spaces? Then spending half an hour dismantling it every time it sucked up a stray cable of yarn from the carpet? Now I find myself pulling out the Dyson just to get the dust bunnies or caked mud out of one corner!
It weighs about nine pounds, it fits in all my narrow spaces without having to move the furniture, the sphere turns on a dime, and it can suck the rust off of an abandoned Studebaker. The attachments click on simply and securely. The roller has a sensor that stops it from turning the moment it detects it slowing down because something is caught in the brush, so it doesn't wind around fifty times. The bucket is easy to clean. It's even light for carrying up stairs, and the stairway attachment is so compact that it does a good job.
The Dyson technology isn't really the Dyson Sphere of sci-fi stories, an artificial sphere millions of miles in diameter built around a sun to capture every kilowatt-hour of its energy in order to power an advanced civilization. It's named after James Dyson, the Briton who invented it. He went inside a sawmill and discovered that the walls were not covered with sawdust because it had a giant fan assembly that created a cyclone effect, spinning the dust down into a collector. He immediately thought of building a vacuum cleaner with the same cyclone technology, since the accumulation of dust on the sides of a brand new bag saps half the power of a conventional vacuum within a few minutes after turning it on for the first time.
Potential demerits: It doesn't have a height adjustment so it may not be the best for thick carpeting. It's got a narrow footprint so if you have a large area it may require more passes. The power cord is fairly short, but then electrical cords are very heavy and that would just add to the weight. It has a bucket instead of a bag so you have to wash it out when you empty it. That doesn't happen very often in my tiny space but again, the small bucket is not meant for a big house.
The larger version of this has all those features you'd want in a big house, but it weighs more and doesn't go into narrow spaces. And when I bought mine, the larger one was actually cheaper.
Other companies have ripped off the idea since it's almost too simple to patent effectively. I have no idea how their products compare. I love my Dyson because it is PURPLE!

I have been waiting for my Oreck to die to purchase a Dyson after trying a friend's Dyson ball two years ago. Lost patience and after a lot of research on Amazon.com decided to buy this model. I was not disappointed in the suction or the maneuverability. I have area carpets, some 20 years old, that almost look new. I did find, though, that it did not pick up small debris. I live in the woods and the critters always bring home gifts of tiny twigs, leaves, etc that were not sucked up even after repeated slow passings with the vacuum. There are two dogs and three cats in our home; two are white. The day after I received the vacuum I tried it on a small chair. I was so excited about how clean it was (I used the mini turbine) I ended up doing all the furniture and then vacuuming all the rugs. I had to empty the bin five times! I have mild asthma so am always concerned about the air when I clean house. Even in a bright sunny room I saw no debris in the air which means I won't be dusting that off the rest of the furniture. The maneuverability was good but the machine is so light I kept picking it up inadvertantly; it is too light. I am 5' 7' and as there is no cord control at the top of the wand I had to keep a hold of the cord constantly and every time it dropped I had to bend over and pick it up. Quite a nuisane and pain in the back. Same for the on/off switch, have to bend over repeatedly. I attributed the difficulty in managing the hose to it's newness. I had to keep a death grip on it to keep it stretched out and since the machine is so light it kept coming at me and/or falling over while I was using the hose. A down side to the ball is I cannot vacuum under furniture I usually do.
Even though it does not have the ball technology, I ordered a DC28 for it's weight. It appears to have a larger cannister as well. I don't mind emptying the cannister once or twice per cleaning but will grow weary emptying it any more than that. This would be a great vacuum if only used for vacuuming rugs. I will say, however, that the mini-turbine tool alone is worth the price of the machine.
